IN MY LIFE

I am STEVE B ROBINSON, the great great grandson of LLEW LLWYFO (Lewis William Lewis), perhaps the gretest bard Wales has ever produced and certainly the most famous Welshman of the 19th century. A self-educated journalist, singer, poet, and author, crowned three times and awarded the coveted chair, and who left the world the way he entered it..............with empty pockets ! But what a life !! I dont compare with him but Im sure my creative side hails from "old Llew" as the family reverantly call him. As for me, well, Im a small time poet (with one competition win to my credit), unpublished author ( I could paper a small bedroom with rejection slips!), one-time-wanna-be journalist (have actually had articles published in local press and in a specialist magazine now only found on the internet), taxi driver and life model. But above all I see myself as an artist. My main concern is the figure and the stories which can be told from its form and position and, despite those who should be suporting me not being able to get beyond comments like, "but theyre all naked!", I continue to create because I believe, because I care. I care about my work, I care that my work changes and grows and matures like a fine wine . I care if people appreciate my work. I care about my friends (I can be fiercely loyal, like a well trained Alsation!). I started art as soon as I left the womb and found myself drawing superheroes and daleks and spitfires and it was all such fun. Then I got told I had to make a living. I tried to go to art school but lost my nerve at the door and so found myself labouring for the next God knows how many years. Then one day I found that "they" didnt want me to earn a living anymore so I went back to a diferent college (as the old one had moved and merged and whatever) and embarked on "A" level art, then onto Foundation Art and Design, then the Universe said its time you made a bit of dosh so I started taking my clothes off for the sake of other peoples art and got sidetracked for the next seven years at LUSAD. Follow this with three years driving a taxi and the call of the art world got stronger. So I applied to Fine Art at DeMontfort University and started my degree programme in September 2005. In between I had always tried to be an artist, had lots of shows but very few sales. I did have commissions. I did manage to get work into open shows in Spain via my Spanish friends in Granada but....................now I realise why my art was kindly called "interesting". My work has altered so much, for the better, since embarking on the degree I cant tell you. Im now 51 years young (in 2007) , mixing with people half my age, having a great laugh, learning loads from them and seeing the next stage of my life so clearly for the first time. Art is truly therapuetic. I hope you like my medicine !!
